Rules for Change of Branch in IIT Madras

My friend is doing the B.Tech Computer science course from the IIT Madras now he wants to change his branch to the B.Tech Electronics. Please share the rules to change branch in IIT Madras after first year? So I can help my friend in this process?

The Rules for Change of Branch in B. Tech Program offered by Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai are as follows:

Change of branch may be permitted subject to the following:


Such change will be considered only at the end of the first semester. The performance during the first semester will be the basis for consideration for change of branch.

One who has successfully completed 1st semester of the course, except Engineering Design Dual Degree students, is eligible for consideration for change of branch, subject to the availability of vacancies.

In making a change of branch, the strength of a class should not fall below the existing strength by more than 10% and should not go above the sanctioned strength by more than 10%. For this purpose, the strength in both cases refers to the total strength of the students in the class.

However, a minimum of one student will be eligible for consideration for change of branch from each discipline at the end of the first semester.

If one with a higher GPA is not offered a particular branch because of other constraints, this should not be offered to any other students with a lower GPA even if one is eligible on the basis of the existing norms.

Change over from 4-year B. Tech programme to 5-year dual degree programme is permitted within the same Department during the sixth semester, provided a student meets the following criteria:
Should have a minimum of 8.0 CGPA from 2011 batch at the end of 5th semester
Should not have any backlog courses

Dual degree student is not eligible for branch/ programme change to 4-year B. Tech programme. However, one is eligible for change of discipline within the same Department, in case the Department offers more than one discipline under their dual degree programme. The Dual Degree students except Engineering Design one is also eligible for change of branch at the end of the first semester as per the Dual Degree Regulations.

Change of branch rules is subject to revision from time to time and the decision of the Senate will be final and binding.
