Re: Merchant Navy after BSc Computer Science

Career in Merchant Navy can be pursued either as an officer or a rating in mainly two specialized fields, i.e. Marine Engineering and Nautical (Deck).

To become a seafarer, following streams of entries (Pre-Sea courses) are available to Indian citizens in the Government as well as in private training institutions (recognized and approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping):-

Officers

3 year degree course in Nautical Science for (10+2) students.

4 year degree course in Marine Engineering for (10+2) students.

2 year course for Diploma Holders.

1 year course for Graduate Mechanical Engineers.

3 month course for Deck Cadets for (10+2) students.

Rating (Entry standard Xth)

4 month Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose (GP) rating.

3 month Pre-Sea Course for Deck rating.

3 month Pre-Sea Course for Engine rating.

4 month Pre-Sea Course for Saloon rating.


Basically for joining Merchant Navy one need to have a B Tech degree and as you have B.Sc (CS) so you do no fulfill the eligibility criteria. You either have to opt for Deck Cadet or other part after having MBA.

Basically you have two options:-

1) Get 10-12 months Pre-Sea training and you can get to Deck side.

Eligibility: 10+2 (PCM) with at least 60% aggregate, as maximum good institutes demand at least 60%. However possibilities are also there with at least 55% aggregate.

2) Get 06 months Pre-Sea Training Course for G.P. Rating (GPR)

Eligibility: 10+2 (PCM) with at least 60% aggregate, as maximum good institutes demand at least 60%. However possibilities are also there with at least 55% aggregate.

Age Limit: 21 years.

3) Get a MBA degree with specialization in Hotel management or Hospitality Management. This can actually fetch you a good job in on going Ships and Cruises. But actually it shouldn't be considered under Merchant Navy.

Age Limit: 23 years relaxation must be there.

HND (Higher National Diploma) Nautical Science
HND (Higher National Diploma) Marine Engineering
B.E Marine Engineering (4-Year Degree course in Marine Engineering)
B.S. in Nautical Technology (3 years training at Institute + 1 year at Sea)
3-Year B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science
2-year Marine Engineering course
1-year Marine Engineering Course, Graduate Marine Engineer(GME)
