To become Marine engineer in Merchant Navy, you have following criteria: A one year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course after mechanical engineering would give students the licence to enter merchant navy. This one year GME course is all you need to become a marine engineer after doing mechanical engineering. Eligibility The applicant should have graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year Must have minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam. Well a career in merchant navy is a mix of variety in a single domain. You must have good eyesight and be physically fit, as you will have to pass a medical before you can start training Qualification Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female). Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed. The eligibility for joining merchant navy is class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination. After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test. Skills, interests and qualities Confidence and the ability to lead and motivate others An interest and understanding of the latest vessel technology The ability to cope with being away from home for long periods of time Good teamworking skills Excellent maths skills for navigational calculations Good spoken and written communication skills The ability to deal with emergencies in a calm and controlled manner Enthusiasm and self-belief.
