Eligibility:
12th pass students can apply for the diploma courses in mainly two specialized fields, Nautical (Deck) and Marine engineering

Age Limit:
The age should be in between 16-25 Years

To join in Merchant Navy you should have fulfill this eligibility criteria:

The Merchant Navy entrance test is carried out for the admittance of aspirants into its engineering and navigational fields. The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is carried out mainly to assess the aspirants’ understanding in mathematics, chemistry and physics. Students who clear the exam with good marks will go for an interview. The eligibility for every post is different which is as follows:

Eligibility for Merchant Navy Entrance Exam

A pass out in class 12th with mathematics and Chemistry as core subjects. They should also have studies physics.

A graduate degree in Marine Engineering or Nautical Science is needed for those aspirants who desire to join the engineering or navigation fields in the merchant navy.

Aspirants who have finished their Bachelors degree in Technical, Mechanical or electrical engineering are eligible to join the Merchant Navy as Fifth Engineer or Engine Cadet.

Age Limit :
16-25 Years

Medical Standards:
Candidates must be physically and mentally strong, fit for sea-services under standard norms.

Selection for Courses to Join Merchant Navy

Candidates are selected for the B.Sc. Nautical Science degree of TS Chanakya, Mumbai; and the four-year Marine Engineering degree course at Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), in Calcutta and Mumbai, known as DMET, through the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), which assesses the candidate’s knowledge of physics, chemistry and mathematics.

After the exam there is personal interviews/counseling, where the interviewers look for the degree of alertness, and awareness of the external environment, in the candidates and their suitability for a career in the Merchant Navy

The entry level for a fresh Marine Engineer (ME) is at the rank of fifth engineer or junior engineer and a Nautical Science graduate is as a Deck Cadet.

Promotions depend on further exams conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), the quality of experience and personal merit. On successfully completing these exams the candidate receives the 'Certificates of Competency' needed for promotion to the respective classes.

This exam is conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) Mumbai, for shaping the promotion prospects for the officers.
