Nephrology services at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research) were offered by the Department of General Medicine from 1980s.

A Nephrology Clinic functioned on Friday afternoons. The independent department of Nephrology at JIPMER was established in January 2010.

Hemodialysis was offered to patients with Acute Kidney Injury and on emergency basis for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. Kidney biopsies were being performed.
