First Semester:

Core Courses: HISTORY OF ANCIENT INDIA UPTO 712 A.D

Description
The paper introduces the basic concepts of ancient socio-economic life and brings forth the issues debated in the subject.

Objectives
TO ENABLE THE STUDENTS
• to acquaint the students with the importance of ancient history
• write and think about ancient life

UNIT I:
Historiography of Ancient India. A.L.Basham, Romila Thapar, D.D.Kosambi, R.S.Sharma,
R.C.Majumdar, K.A.Nilakanta Sastri, B.S.Chobbra, D.N,Jha Conceptual Meaning; Bharat-varsu, Saba & Samiti, Varnasrama, Purusharthas, Rina, Samskaras, Yajna, Doctorine of Karma, Dandaniti / Arthasastra Saptanga, Dharma Vijaya Stupa / Chaitya, Nagara / Dravida / Vesara.
Bodhi sattava. Tirthankara, Alwars / Nayanmars Sreni. Kara / Vishti, Stridhana Memorial stones, Agraharas – Races – Unity in Diversity


UNIT II: SOURCES, PRE HISTORY AND PROTO – HISTORY:
Archaeological Sources, Exploration, Excavation, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Monuments -
Literary Sources: Indigenous, Primary and Secondary problems of dating myths, legends, Poetry, Scientific literature, Literature in regional languages, religious literature, Foreign Accounts, Greek, Chinese, and Arab writers Pre History and Proto History: Man and Environment Geographical factors, Hunting and Gathering (Paleolithic and Mesolithic) Tools used for Production- knowledge -Construction for the establishment of power – Beginning of agriculture (Neolithic and Chalcolithic) Irrigation and Implements – Natural Resources – Indus Valley civilization – Marshall - Discoveries –Origin – Date – extent characteristics, Decline, survival and significance.
