Merchant navy is government as well as private sector also, means it belongs to both sector. Here are the details of it:

Required qualification:
The applicant should have completed 12th with minimum 60% marks in the Maths , Chemistry, Physics subjects from any recognized board of India.

Physical requirements:
Candidate should be physically and mentally fit.
Candidate should have perfect eyesight.
Candidate height should be 163cm

Here is the list of Merchant Navy courses in India:

Pre Sea Training
3 month Pre-Sea Course in Deck rating.
3 month Pre-Sea Course in Engine rating.
4 month Pre-Sea Course in Saloon rating.

Deck cadet
STCW Course
Pre-sea Training for personnel, man Dredgers, Tugs, OSVs, etc on N.C.V (DECK)
Pre-sea Training for personnel, man Dredgers, Tugs, OSVs, etc on N.C.V (ENGINE)
1 year Pre-Sea Diploma in Nautical Science
HND (Higher National Diploma) Nautical Science
HND (Higher National Diploma) Marine Engineering
B.E Marine Engineering (4-Year Degree course in Marine Engineering)
B.S. in Nautical Technology (3 years training at Institute + 1 year at Sea)
3-Year B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science
2-year Marine Engineering course
1-year Marine Engineering Course, Graduate Marine Engineer(GME)
B.Tech NAVAL ARCHITECURE & SHIP BUILDING (4 years)
