Re: Strategy For UPCAT

Here is Five Less-Known Things About The Upcat And Tips On How They Can Help You Pass

1. The UPG is computed by taking 60% of your UPCAT score, 40% of your HS grades, and some equity considerations.

2. The test is right minus 1/4 wrong.

Consider guessing as a gamble. If you get the answer right, you get 1 point if you get it wrong, you get -0.25.

Pay-off of guessing = (Probability of getting the answer right) x (Pay-off)
+ (Probability of getting the answer wrong) x (Penalty)
For guessing to be rational decision, pay-off of guessing > pay-off of not guessing:
= (1/4) x (1) + (3/4) x (-1/4) >0
= (1/4) – (3/16) >0
= 1/16 > 0

3. Public school students are more probable to pass the UPCAT than private schools.
Based on a study of the passing rates of public and private schools in the UPCAT,
Public=24% > 13%=Private

4. Diliman and Manila campuses have the lowest passing rates.
This is because they get the most applicants and have fixed quotas.

5. You don’t need to take the UPCAT if you have real sports, music or art skills.

Students can apply for the Varsity Application Program of the College of Human Kinetics or take the Talent Determination Test of UP colleges such as the College of Fine Arts and Music and still get into UP without taking or passing the UPCAT.
