On behalf of UGC, the Central Board of Secondary Education conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor Both in Indian universities and colleges. UGC NET Eligibility Criteria • One is required to have score 55 per cent marks in Masters Degree. • One in the final year of Masters programme or those whose examinations have been delayed can also apply. However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be eligible after their results are declared and they obtain minimum 55 per cent marks in those exams. • One who hold PhD degree and have completed their Masters degree before September 19, 1991 shall be provided with relaxation of marks up to 5 per cent. • NET/ SLET/ SET shall remain the minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in Universities/Colleges/Institutions. Though the candidates who are or have been awarded a PhD degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (minimum standards and procedure for award of Ph.D degree) regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/ SLET/ SET. • Those who have qualified the UGC/CSIR JRF examination prior to 1989 need not have to necessarily appear for NET. • Besides, the candidates who have qualified the State Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor held before June 1, 2002 are free from appearing in NET. Rather, they are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor anywhere in India. Subjects UGC conducts NET in following subjects 1. Economics 2. Political Science 3. Philosophy 4. Psychology 5.
