As you want I am here telling you about the eligibility criteria for University Grants Commission’s (UGC) – NET examination for Lectureship.

Eligibility Criterai :

Qualification :

Applicants who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognised by UGC.

Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to non-creamy layer / Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / Persons with disability (PWD) category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks in Master’s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

Applicants who have appeared OR will be appearing at the qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited may also apply for this Test.

Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks for appearing in NET.

Applicants belonging to OBC (Non-creamy layer)/SC/ST/PWD category are required to submit attested copy of the category Certificate.

Age Limit & Relaxation

For Assistant Professor:
No upper age limit.

For Junior Research Fellowship:
Not more than 28 years .

Relaxation upto 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC/SC/ST/PWD categories and to women applicants.

Scheme of Test



Paper-I shall be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

Sixty (60) multiple choice questions of two marks each will be given, out of which the candidate would be required to answer any fifty (50). In the event of the candidate attempting more than fifty questions, the first fifty questions attempted by the candidate would be evaluated.

Paper-II shall consist of 50 objective type compulsory questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry 2 marks.


Paper-III will consist of 75 objective type compulsory questions from the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry 2 marks..

UGC NET Exam will be conducted by NTA to determine the candidate’s eligibility for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or for Assistant Professor only posts in Indian Universities and Colleges. UGC NET Exam will only be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT) in various subjects at selected Exam Centres spread across the country.



Academic Qualification


One must secure at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in master degree or equivalent exam from UGC recognized universities/colleges in Humanities (including languages) and Social Science, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc.

50% marks required for candidates belonging to OBC non-creamy layer/SC/ST/ PWD category.

Transgender candidates will also be eligible having qualifying criteria similar to SC / ST / PWD categories.

One pursuing master’s degree or have appeared for final exam and awaiting result can also apply. Such candidates have to qualify master’s degree with required percentage according to category. Candidates will have to complete the master degree within 2 years of declaration of UGC NET result.

One with PHD degree whose master’s exam was completed by 19th September 1991 will be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks.

One having post-graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian University/ Institute or foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by the foreign University/institute should in the own interest; ascertain the equivalence of the diploma/degree/certificate with Master s degree of recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.


Age Limit:

Assistant Professor:


There is no age limit set for applying for Assistant professor.

One is eligible if successfully qualify NET/SLET/SET exam.

One with PHD degree in accordance with University Grants Commission will be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor in Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions.

One, who has cleared State Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor held prior to 1st June 2002, is exempted from appearing in NET.
