Indian Customs is one of the two important wings of The Indian Revenue Services the second being the Income tax. The Indian Customs (IC) is mainly concerned with couple of main aspects i.e. Customs and Excise.

Customs officers are concerned with the checking and levy of duty on taxable goods imported into the country. Custom officers are posted at international airports and ports like, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Goa, etc.

Job Requirements:

Degree Level:
Bachelor's degree required by federal agencies

Degree Field:
No specific degree field is required

Experience:
3 years experience is required for entry-level (GS-5) positions for applicants without bachelor's degrees; applicants with bachelor's degrees require no experience for entry-level positions

Key Skills:
Communication skills, good judgment, leadership skills, perceptiveness, multi-tasking skills

Computer Skills:
Customs officers may use database user interface and query software, such as Automated Manifest Systems, Law Enforcement Information databases, the National Crime Information Center database and Treasury Enforcement Communications Systems

Technical Skills:
Ability to handle firearms and handcuffs, and to use x-ray examination equipment and radiation detectors

Additional Requirements:
Physical strength and stamina; customs officers are required to pass fitness tests


You can begin your Career as Assistant Collectors of Customs/Central Excise and may rise up in the hierarchy to the level of Chief Collector of Customs.

The job of the Customs department is to control the import and export of goods with the purpose of collecting duty and maintain a check on the entry of prohibited and restricted goods. The customs officer checks that smuggling does not take place.

Eligibility Criteria

A Bachelor degree is the basic qualification. A custom officer who is working under the Government of India should be above 19 yrs and must have completed graduation.

Applicant must score above 55% of marks and then only can he/she apply. The admit card is sent out based on the merit achieved in graduation level.

The notifications are published in the employment newspaper and other prominent periodicals.

The exam is conducted annually but there are many other private companies who offer the same job.

Qualifying Exam

In order to become a Customs Officer, the aspirants need to appear for the Civil Services Examination. It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

The Entrance exam provides entry into 27 different services which includes the Indian Customs & Central Excise Services.

The Civil Service Exam is conducted in two separate parts. They are the Preliminary and Main Exam.

Those who are selected are either sent to Chennai for training in the functions of Customs Department or those selected for Central Excise Service training is done in one of the metropolitan cities.

Qualities required for the position as a Custom Officer
Age limit- 18 years old
Indian citizenship
Must possess a Vehicle license
Ability to work flexible schedules
Have reliable transportation
Should never have used drugs of any kind
Must pass an extensive background check
Must be able to successfully complete all training required for the desired position
Must be able to activate a radio or telephone equipment and console monitors
Display an aptitude to cooperate genially and communicate with the community
