Re: QIP IIT Chennai

Indian Institute of Technology Madras offer Quality Improvement Programme through IISc (Indian Institute of Science). The course structure of Undergraduate Programme-Humanities Courses offered under Quality Improvement Programme by Indian Institute of Technology Madras is as follows:

Semester I: Ways of Knowing

Course Code: UH-101
Instructor: Prof. S.V. Srinivas
Course Description:

Module 1: Ethnographic methods
What is culture? How are cultural practices and patterns reproduced and carried forward in time? Questions such as these can be explored with the help of qualitative ethnographic methods. Originating in cultural anthropology, these are now widely used across the human sciences. Typically, ethnography collects empirical data about human societies, using fieldwork, participant observation, questionnaires, interviews, chain sampling, etc. to understand how social meanings are created. Of special interest to science students would be the reflexive and interpretive emphasis of ethnography, since it has a bearing on how to read and write up scientific findings. The module will expose students to some key debates in this area through short readings and documentary films.

Module 1: Texts and Readings for classroom discussion:
Clifford Geertz, Thick Description and Notes on the Balinese Cockfight, in The
Interpretation of Cultures

James Clifford, On Ethnographic Authority

Kirin Narayan, How Native is a Native Anthropologist?

Laura Nader, Ethnography as Theory

Raymond Williams, Culture and Native, in Keywords: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society

Raymond Williams, The Analysis of Culture. In John Storey ed. Cultural Theory and Popular Culture: A Reader
