As you are asking about the NSS in Madras University so I want to tell you that NSS stands for National Service Scheme which is a value based programme for youth to developing the personality of their educated youth by involving them in community development during their free hours. This scheme was come up in the University of Madras as early as 1969.
Enrolment
The National Service Scheme had a voluntary strength of 18,300 during 2002-2003 which was spread over in 105 colleges in the University of Madras.

Regular NSS activities in Madras University is listed below:
• College level Advisory committee formation
• Enrollment of NSS Volunteers
• Rescue Squad formation -30 Volunteers per unit
• Village adoption and survey
• Mass Tree Plantation - 300 saplings per unit per year.
• Literacy - Educating 50 illiterates per unit per year.
• One 'AIDS Awareness' Programme per college per year - One day seminar for student community, exhibition, Cycle Rally / Rally for general public.
• One Blood Donation Camp per college per year
• Immunization Programme
• Career Guidance Programme in each College.
• Sensitizing the any two of the following (for village Community)
(a) Consumer Awareness,
(b) Voter's Awareness,
(c) Child Labour Eradication,
(d) Family Welfare and Population Education,
(e) Women Empowerment.
