Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty (NPS) is a certification exam conducted by National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
The objective of exam is to assess knowledge and skills of respiratory therapists in this specialized area.

Eligibility-
The applicant is a registered respiratory therapist (RRT).

The applicant is a certified respiratory therapist (CRT) having one year of clinical experience in neonatal/pediatrics specialty.

Test Format-
There are 140 multiple choice questions in this exam, of which 120 are scored and 20 are not scored.

The exam is administered in 3 hours time period.

Topics covered;

Critical Care:
– Evaluate Pertinent Information; Administer and Monitor Specialty Gases; Select, Assemble, and Troubleshoot Equipment; Assess and Manage Airways; Manage Ventilation and Oxygenation; Assist or Perform Procedures; Prevent Ventilator Associated Pneumonia; Assist or Perform Resuscitation; Deliver Pharmacologic Agents.

General Care: – Assess Patient Status and Changes in Status; Anticipate Care Based on Laboratory Results and Nutritional Status; Anticipate Effects of Pharmacologic Agents; Anticipate Care Based on Imaging and Reports of Imaging; Select, Assemble, and Troubleshoot Equipment; Prepare for Disasters; Manage End-of-Life Care; Interact with Members of an Interdisciplinary Team; Evaluate Patient and Family Understanding of Education.

The content of this exam covers following disorders or conditions- General disorders, Prematurity acute phase, Neonatal pulmonary disorders, Asthma, Infectious diseases, Chronic lung disease of prematurity, Congenital defects that require surgical correction, Bronchiolitis, Congenital heart diseases, Shock, Trauma, Neuromuscular disorders, Cystic fibrosis, Neurologic disorders, Pediatric airway, Immunocompromised, Inhalation injuries, and Heart failure.

Schedule-

This exam is offered at authorized test centers of NBRC in United States and at international sites from Monday through Saturday each week

NPS fees structure is as follow-
Initial application: – $250
Re-application: – $220
Re-certification (Active): – $75
Re-certification (Inactive): – $220
