The Maharaja Sayajirao University is situated in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat, India. It is originally known as the Baroda College of Science, it became a university in 1949 after the country became independent.

After the establishment of the M.S. University in 1949, the Professor named S.D. Manerikar was appointed as the first Head of the Department of Mathematics. Then in early fifties Professor P.R. Masani from Bombay, Professor S.M. Shah from Aligarh and Professor N.M. Shah from Surat were choosed as the Board of Studies in Mathematics. These works hard so Professor Masani recommended developing Mathematics at M.S. University and a course "Modern Algebra" was introduced at the graduate level as early as 1954.

In 1973, a new Department of Applied Mathematics was created in the Faculty of Technology and Engineering. After the separation, the department further carried out high quality researches published in several journals of national and international repute in various areas such as Lacunary Fourier Series, Harmonic Analysis, Functional Analysis, Orthogonal Series, Special Functions, Fourier Bessel Series, Topology and Topological Dynamics, Summability theory and Relativistic Astrophysics. Infact, the quality researches done by several members have earned the department prestigious research prizes, several visits abroad for carrying out research projects and a prestigious UGC Career Award in Mathematics.

Currently, the Department handles teaching of about 1500 students, which produces good quality researches, and have developed a good laboratory and has introduced various courses such as C++ Language, Computing Techniques in Mathematics, Wavelet Analysis, Fuzzy sets and its applications, Topological Dynamics and many more at M.Sc. level.
