The Department of Library Science (now Department of Library and Information Science) of Lucknow University was established in 1972 for providing education and training in the discipline of Library and Information Science.

The Department offer Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees in Library and Information Science.

The Bachelor Degree in Library and Information Science awarded by it is equivalence to the one year Master’s Degree in Library Science (MS) of the American Universities by the Association of Indian Universities.

It also runs short term courses of 2-4 weeks duration to the professional Librarians and Information personnel.

Conferences/Seminars
The Department has organized many national, regional and state level conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops, etc., from time to time.

The most prestigious programmed hosted by the Department are:-

National Seminar on “User Education in Academic Libraries” 6-10th November 1986. (The proceedings of the same were edited and published).

National Seminar on “Problems of Information Science” 21-24th March 1993. (The proceedings were published subsequently).

Twentieth All India Conference of the IASLIC (Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres)” on “Information Technology Products of 1990s and Libraries and Information Centres” from 26th to 29th of December 1995.

The major highlights of the Department are as follows:-

The UGC in its XI plan has sanctioned grant of Rs. 10 lakhs for the Computer laboratory
The Department has instituted Prof. C.G. Viswanathan Gold Medal to be awarded to the topper in the BLISc programme in each year.
