Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research was established by the French Government in 1823 as ‘Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry’ The college was centered in modified buildings of the High Court, which is now the Legislative Assembly Hall. In the year 1956, The Ambassador of France laid the foundation medical college that centered on the outskirts of Pondicherry town. President of India Dr. S. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the hospital on 13 July 1964. In July 2008, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research was given the status of an Institution of National Importance . On 15 October 2008, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss and Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the trauma care centre ,super-specialty block, and the auditorium and dedicated JIPMER . The present expansion of JIPMER has seen the development of the JIPMER Academic Centre, the new hostel complex for postgraduates and undergraduates , the JIPMER Women and Children’s Hospital, and a common wellness centre including a dining hall, gymnasium and other amenities.
