The Department of Vegetable Crops, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was established during 1979 to undertake research and extension work in tropical, subtropical and temperate vegetable crops especially in solanaceous, cucurbitaceous, malvaceous, bulb, root and tuber vegetable crops particularly tomato, brinjal, chilli, bhendi, amranthus, gourds, cassava and sweetpotato and minor tubers like coleus
