The Goa University was established in 1985. The Goa University campus spans over a very large area covering nearly the whole of the plateau with different blocks in different locations on the plateau.

Goa University was established under the Goa University Act of 1984 (Act No. 7 of 1984) and commenced operations on 1 June 1985.

Goa University has thirteen teaching departments and seventeen affiliated colleges. It provides postgraduate courses and Phd courses as well with twenty four postgraduate departments spanned over three centers on its campus.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked Goa University 98 overall in India and 68 among universities in 2018.
