Re: Hawaii Pacific University FNP
For nurses who want to provide culturally-appropriate primary care services for families, the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program is for them. In many states certified FNP are able to practice autonomously. FNPs are highly sought after as the number of general practice physicians (GPs) decrease because these highly trained nurses are able to care for patients across the life span. The FNPs ability to focus on the promotion of health and disease prevention in primary care settings results in improving the quality of life of individuals under their care. MSN-FNP The MSN FNP (Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner) at HPU is a fully-accredited 50-credit Masters in nursing degree with a track population focus in Family, covering all ages across the lifespan. This makes the FNP certification the most marketable degree. This face-to-face program, with many individual classes increased with online and hybrid formats. The core MSN courses are taken the first year, generally two afternoons per week if full-time, and over two years if taken part-time. The FNP track-specific courses are taken after completion of the 20-credit core courses, and these are taken as full-time, which is 9 credits/ term at the graduate level. This allows one to complete the didactic primary care courses prior to starting the practicum placements. The FNP Coordinator will facilitate securing practicum sites for student placements. This is an important feature offered by the HPU FNP program, as class sites are quite competitive nationally, and especially on Oahu. Practicum courses are completed in summer for an August graduation or in fall if one chooses to take the last term part-time along with studying and taking the national FNP credentialing exam once clinical hours are completed.
