The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh was conceived in 1960 as a center of excellence which would endeavour to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as possible and attempt to produce specialists in several disciplines of medicine.

It has one of the best departments that Department Of Transfusion Medicine through this department PGIMER offers various services:

Blood Collection II. Component Preparation

Voluntary Donors 1. Packed red blood cells

Replacement Donors 2. Fresh frozen plasma

Directed donors 3. Single donor plasma

Blood Donation Camps 4. Platelet rich plasma

Blood Donation Complex 5. Random platelet concentrate

Cryoprecipitate
Cryo-poor plasma

Transfusion Transmitted Disease Testing on donor units :

HBs Antigen test for Hepatitis B
Anti HIV-1/2 antibody test for HIV
RPR/VDRL test for syphilis
Anti HCV antibody test for hepatitis C
Malaria screening by peripheral smear

Emergency Service :
Round the clock for supply of blood and blood components to patients within PGI and in the region.
