IES is stand for Indian Engineering Services, abbreviated are the civil services that meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India.

Like most countries, the Government of India recruits its civil servants and officials on the basis of merit, the middle management positions in the bureaucracy are filled through competitive exams.

Large number of applicants takes these exams, competing for limited posts.

Indian Engineering Services officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

A combined four-stage competitive examination (comprising six tests), called the Engineering Services Examination which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.


IES Examination Pattern
The entrance for Indian Engineering Service comprises of a Written Exam
(section I and II) and an Interview.
The details follow:
One Engineering Discipline should be chosen from the following categories:
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

The written examination will comprise two sections:
Section I - objective types questions
Section II – conventional (essay) type questions papers.

Both Sections will cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering subject.
