Wright State University was founded in 1964 and the Department of Police was founded 1980 but In 2003, the Wright State University Department of Public Safety officially changed its name to the Wright State University Police Department.

The department currently has 20 sworn police officers, including the Chief of Police, one Assistant Chief of Police, a Captain, and two Lieutenants.
