Re: Grading System In IIT Bombay

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) is one of the Indian Institutes of Technology in the country, set up with the objective of making available facilities for higher education, research and training in various fields of Science and Technology.

Student’s attention is brought particularly to the assessment procedures and the specific rules governing the grading system, academic performance requirements, etc.

Semester Performance Index (SPI)

The performance of a student in a semester is indicated by a number called Semester Performance Index, SPI.

SPI= (C1*g1+C2*g2+C3*g3+C4*g4+C5*g5)/(C1+C2+C3+C4+C5)

For every course taken by a student he/she is assigned a grade based on his/her combined performance over the semester in all the assessments in that course.

These grades are described by the letters AP, AA, AB, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD, FR and DX, each of which not only indicates a qualitative assessment of the student's performance but also carries a quantitative (numeric) equivalent called the grade point as:

Letter Grade Grade Point

AP 10
AA 10
AB 9
BB 8
BC 7
CC 6
CD 5
DD 4
FR 0 Fail (Repeat the course)
DX Fail (Lack of attendance)
II Incomplete (on health grounds)
DR Dropped
PP Passed
NP Not Passed
AU Audit
