The Indian Economic Service is the administrative civil service which is under Grade A of the Central Civil Services of the executive branch of the Government of India.

It was founded in 1961.

More than 21 years and less than 30 years:

Educational Qualifications:

Candidates must be post graduates from a recognized university in Economics/ Business Economics / Applied Economics /Econometrics.

Paper Pattern:

In part 1, there is will be a written examination of 1000 marks of the following subjects.
General English- 100 Marks
General Studies- 100 Marks
General Economics-I- 200 Marks
General Economics-II- 200 Marks
General Economics-III- 200 Marks
General Economics- 200 Marks
The duration of examination for each subject is three hours.
Questions papers of the subjects are based on conventional (essay) type.
The medium of answering IES exam is English only.
Qualified candidates must write the papers in their own handwriting, whatsoever the circumstances are.
The qualifying marks for a particular or all the subjects can be fixed by the Commission.
If candidate’s handwriting is not easily legible, then there will be deduction from the total marks.
No marks are awarded for mere superficial knowledge.
Credit is given for giving orderly, effective and exact expression combined with due economy of words.
SI units should be used in the answers, wherever necessary.
Non-programmable scientific calculator type is allowed to use.
The candidates must use only International form of Indian numerals (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc.) while answering the question papers.
In part 2, the candidates qualified in the written examination may be called by the Commission, for Viva Voice of maximum 200 marks.

General English
Candidates are required to write essay in English. Other questions are designed to test their understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. Passages are use to set for summary.

G.K, Current Affairs, Social Development, Politics, Economy, Foreign Relation, Social Issues, Business Related Topics, Indian History and Geography of a nature.

General Economics-I
Part-A
Welfare Economics ,Theory of Consumers Demand, Theory of Value, Theory of Production ,Theory of Distribution

Part-B
Quantitative Methods in Economics (Mathematical Methods in Economics, Statistical and Econometric Methods)

General Economics-II
Global Institutions, Concept of National Income and Social Accounting, Economic Growth and Development, Financial and Capital Market, Theory of employment, Output, Inflation, Money and Finance, International Economics, Balance of Payments and Economic Thought.

General Economics-III
Environmental Economics, State, Market and Planning, Industrial Economics, Public Finance

Indian Economics

History of Development and Planning, Budgeting and Fiscal Policy, Federal Finance, Agriculture and Rural Development Strategies, Poverty, Unemployment and Human Development, India’s experience with Urbanization and Migration, Foreign Trade, Industry, Labour, Inflation , Money and Banking.
