Re: Yale University Police Salary
The Yale University Police Department has 87 sworn police officers with full powers of law enforcement and arrest. The officers are armed and patrol the campus on foot, by motorcycles, on mountain bikes, and in cars equipped with latest computers and radio communications systems. Values of the Yale University Police Department: • Integrity: Basing the decisions on what is legally and ethically right, safeguarding the legal rights, privileges, and dignity of all people. • Trust: Maintaining the highest level of faith and honesty with those served by holding to the highest standards of performance. • Commitment: Exhibiting the spirit of determination and dedication that leads to professionalism and the achievement of superiority in every endeavour. • Courage: satisfying the mental, moral, and physical strength necessary to carry us through the challenges of policing. A state commission has lined that the Yale Police Department is not legally required to disclose how much its top officials are paid. The Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission (FOIC) has ruled 3–1 that even though the YPD is a public agency, its officers’ salaries are paid by Yale, a private institution, and therefore are not public information. However at the end of the last academic year, former New Haven Police Chief James Lewis has taken the place as head of the YPD and as the head of the NHPD, Lewis’ $150,000 salary was public record. |
