Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a research institution in Mumbai and Hyderabad, India. It is a Deemed University . it works under Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India.

Institute was founded on 1st June1945 with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

It was inaugurated by Sir John Colville and Homi Bhabha was appointed its first director.
