VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. VITA is a program supported by the Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Prep & E-File Xavier VITA’s trained and certified volunteer tax preparers offer FREE tax preparation and electronic filing of federal and state returns to eligible participants. Who is Eligible? The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $53,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. What to Bring Proof of identification – Picture ID Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return Both spouses, if married filing jointly All tax forms.
