Re: UPSC Geologist Exam Qualification

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Combined Geologist & Geo-Scientist Examination eligibility qualification details are as follows:

Educational Qualification

Master's degree in Geology/Applied Geology or Marine Geology from a recognized university; or

Diploma of Associateship in Applied Geology of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; or

Master's degree in Mineral exploration from a recognized university (for posts in GSI); or

Master's degree in Hydrogeology from a recgonized university (for posts in CGWB)

Candidates appearing in the requisite qualification can also apply for the examination but are required to submit proof of passing along with detailed application form.

Age - limits:

21-32 years on 1st January of the year of examination.

Age Relaxation:
i) 5 years in case of SC/ST candidates
ii) 3 years for OBC candidates
iii) Age is additionally relaxable by 5 years for those applicants who had ordinarily been domiciled in the Kashmir Division in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period 01st January 1980 to 31st December 1989
iv) 3 years for Defence Services personnel (disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof)
v) 5 years in case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs
vi) 10 years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically Handicapped persons

Selection Process

Stage I: Written Examination
Stage II: Interview/Personality Test of such candiates as may be called by the Commission, carrying a maximum of 200 marks

Syllabus of the Written Examination:
The standard of the paper in General English will be such as may be expected of a Science Graduate.
The papers on geological subjects will be approximately of the MSc degree standard standard of an Indian University and questions will generally be set to test the candidate’s grasp of the fundamentals in each subject.

General English Paper:
Candidate will be required to write a short Essay in English.
Other questions will be designed to test their under-standing of English and workmanlike use of words.
