Re: University of Madras Biophysics

he Department of Crystallography and Biophysics was established in 1952 with Prof. G.N. Ramachandran, F.R.S. as the Head. His virtuoso guided the Department in its initial years and prompted a few to spearheading disclosures.

The examination topic of the staff keeps on being Structural Biology-viz, (i) to clarify the structure - capacity relationship of natural frameworks with uncommon accentuation on biopolymers; and (ii) the improvement of procedures for basic portrayal of biomolecules.

The Department has facilitated around 12 International meetings and around 45 at the National Level. Countless researchers from India and abroad including more than 30 Nobel Laureates have gone by the Department. Right from the earliest starting point the University Grants Commission has been supporting the exploration exercises of the Department liberally through awards under CAS, SAP and COSIST programs. The Department of Science and Technology has remembered this Department for help under FIST Program (Level-II). The Department has as of late been moved up to the status of 'Focus of Advance Study' from April , 2007. In the previous two years, UGC has endorsed 15 Research Fellowships in Science for Meritorious Students of the Department.

The Department leads a two year M.Sc. (Biophysics) course other than the Ph.D. program. The advanced gear of the office incorporates single precious stone X-beam diffractometer, IR, and UV noticeable spectrophotometers, ultracentrifuge, HPLC, a few SGI workstations and an extensive number of PC's. A current biochemical research center with cutting edge gear is likewise accessible. As of late the DBT has authorized a gigantic award of Rs.2.53 Crores for building up a macromolecular information gathering office.
