Re: Solar Energy And Its Advantages

Solar power is the conversion of the energy from the sun to usable electricity. The most common source of solar power utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity.

Advantages of Solar Power:

Solar energy is a clean and renewable energy source.

Once a solar panel is installed, solar energy can be produced free of charge.

Solar energy will last forever whereas it is estimated that the world’s oil reserves will last for 30 to 40 years.

Solar energy causes no pollution.

Solar cells make absolutely no noise at all.

Very little maintenance is needed to keep solar cells running.

Disadvantages of Solar Power

Solar panels can be expensive to install resulting in a time-lag of many years for savings on energy bills to match initial investments.

Electricity generation depends entirely on a countries exposure to sunlight; this could be limited by a countries climate.

Solar power stations do not match the power output of similar sized conventional power stations; they can also be very expensive to build.

Solar power is used to charge batteries so that solar powered devices can be used at night

List of solar power stations located in India:

1 Charanka Solar Power Plant (Gujarat): 221 MW:
The cost of the project is Rs. 1,700 crores and it is mitigating approximately 8 million tonnes of CO2 levels every year

2 Neemuch Solar Power Plant (Madhya Pradesh): 151 MW:
It is supplying power to almost 6,24,000 homes in the surrounding areas.

Statistics:

Operational since: Feb, 2014
Cost of the project: Rs. 1100 crores
Area: 750 acres (300 hectares)
Cost of power: It supplies power at the rate of Rs.8.05 per KWHr or per unit

3 Sakri Power Plant (Maharashtra): 125 MW

4 Rajasthan Solar Project (Rajasthan): 50 MW

5 GEDCOL Solar Power Plant (Odisha): 50 MW

6 NTPC’s Solar Power Project (Madhya Pradesh): 50 MW

7 GEDCOL Solar Power Plant (Odisha): 48 MW

8 Bitta Solar Power Plant (Gujarat): 40 MW

9 Dhirubhai Ambani Solar Plant (Rajasthan): 40 MW
