Fraunhofer ISE (Institute for Solar Energy Systems) was founded in 1981 by Prof. Adolf Goetzberger in Freiburg, Germany. Its first largest solar energy research institute is located at Europe. The work at institute is for investigation of scientific and technological fundamentals for solar energy applications.

Institute first areas of focus were following:
• The fluorescent collector FLUKO
• Transparent insulation and the initial steps towards high efficiency silicon and III-V solar cells
• Silicon thin film solar cells and material research
