Methods of deducing organic reaction mechanisms, Hammond postulate, Curtin-Hammett principle, linear free energy relationships; Hammett and Taft equations. Organic transformations and molecular rearrangements. Reactive intermediates, classical and nonclassical carbocations, carbanions, free radicals, carbenes, nitrenes, arynes, radical ions, diradicals, concerted reactions, Woodward-Hoffman rules.

Chemistry of Biological Systems



Molecules of nature: amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates. Mechanism of action of selected enzymes and coenzymes, enzyme inhibition. Concepts of biological cell, membranes and their components. Different membranous properties, phase-transition, lipid motions, transport in membranes, molecular biology, chemistry of nucleic acid, DNA synthesis, cloning and use of recombinant DNA technology, proteins, immunochemistry, catalytic antibodies. Other important developments in current literature. Requirements include submission of a term paper on a topic current literature and presentation of a seminar.
