Re: NKU University Police

Northern Kentucky University's Police Department has dedicated professionals who have a deep personal commitment to community policing and continuous improvement that focuses on the safety and high quality-of-life all expect and enjoy.

Northern Kentucky University's Police Department mission is to serve, educate, and protect the public through community collaboration, problem recognition, problem resolution and police action.

Purpose of a Criminal Background Check
Fingerprint-based criminal background checks are used to recognize prior criminal convictions.

Safety Guidelines and recommendations:

After dark on campus
Always pursue well-lit paths and stay out of shadows.
Walk with a crowd whenever possible.
Tell a friend or roommate where you are leaving and when you expect to return. Do not place this information on the outside of the door.
If one must walk through the campus alone at night, call the University Police at 5500 and ask for an escort.
Avoid remote places, both day and night. If one must work or study alone on weekends or holidays in offices, labs, or out-of-the-way places, lock the doors and inform a friend and the University Police where you are.
Park the car in well-lit areas and as close as possible to the destination.

On a date
Relationship and date rape occurs more frequently on college campuses than rape by strangers.
A recent survey found out that 25 percent of all female college students surveyed were fatalities of rape or attempted rape, and that 84 percent of those raped already knew their attackers.
In another analysis, more than 30 percent of the male college students admitted to using force or emotional pressure to attain sex.
Dates should communicate clearly with each other. Explicit approval should be obtained/granted before sexual activity begins. If an associate or date initiates sexual activity, clearly indicate whether or not one wishes this activity to continue. Give or reject consent.
