POMS is organizing its international conference in collaboration with National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, India from December 18-21, 2014.

About the POMS Conferences

A major thrust of the NITIE POMS conference by design has been to include academic Ph.D. research.

This has enabled the NITIE POMS conference to be a forum wherein the participants gain a stronger understanding of the problems faced by the industry and academic research.

Themes of conferences

While the conference had a large number of tracks, the edited volume combined the papers across these tracks into five major interconnected themes related to manufacturing excellence:

1. Design for Manufacturing Excellence:

As we know, choices made in the design stage have the largest influence on the downstream activities.

Issues discussed ranged from robust product and process design to logistics network design.

2. Sourcing for Manufacturing Excellence: Effective sourcing strategies constitute an important role in making organizations effective.

The topics included vendor selection, sustainable purchasing, and information sharing among others.

While most papers focused on decision making, a few also addressed the importance of being cognizant of behavioural issues in sourcing and procurement.

3. Supply Chain for Manufacturing Excellence:

The papers focussed on enhancing supply chain performance in domestic, regional, and global supply chains.

4. Optimization for Manufacturing Excellence:

The issues addressed here dealt more at the plant and shop floor levels.

The papers addressed issues related to productivity, assembly line efficiency, quality, and maintenance management.

5. Managing service operations in emerging economies and other societal issues:

Some of the societal issues of interest included management of public distribution system in food sector, and addressing healthcare challenges for Tuberculosis treatment in regional India.
