National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur was formerly established as a Regional Institute of Technology in 1960 by Dr. Srikrishna Sinha, the chief minister of the Indian state of Bihar (undivided) at Jamshedpur.. NIT jamshedpur was the only REC which was group of an institute of technology relatively than a college of engineering at that time.

The college was promoted to National Institute of Technology on 27th December, 2002, and awarded the status of a Deemed University. It is now under the complete organized of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, and New Delhi since 1st April, 2003.
