Initially from 1971 as a “Speech Therapy Unit” under the Department of Neurology in National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, the services were rendered to patients with communication disorders and eventually accorded a separate departmental status in 1980 as Department of Speech Therapy, which was later re-designated as Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology to project its nature of function in the areas of Speech-Language pathology and Audiology. Academics / Courses Conducted Doctoral Course: Ph.D. in Speech Pathology & Audiology: One admitted to the program will be thoroughly trained in clinical and theoretic aspects of the field of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. However, the emphasis of theoretical training will be on the topics related to the doctoral program. This is in addition to the course work that one has to undergo which is set by the Institute. The department has full-fledged laboratories for work in the areas of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The strength of the department is in the number and variety of the clinical population it caters to. Undergraduate Internship Program for Speech and Hearing students: The students from various speech and hearing graduate training institutions in India are posted for 2 months to undergo clinical training. The internees are supervised by the consultants at the department during their diagnostic and therapeutic work-up to gain hands-on experience to deal with patients. They are trained on diagnostic formulations, Communication profiling, Counselling as well as interventional strategies using brain-behaviour paradigm. Professional Skill Training in Speech and Hearing: A short term internship program on individual requests for graduates and post graduates qualifications are also offered on case-to-case basis. Internship for ENT post graduates: The students of ENT are posted to get exposure to different audiological tests, collation and interpretation of test results with emphasis on neuro-auditory disorders. Other Manpower development programs: The department also contribute to the manpower development of other departments in the institute by way of offering lecture classes, chairing seminars and clinical training. It also supports students both within and outside the institute in their dissertational research work.
