d) A 3transmission line operating at 10kV and having a resistance of 1and reactance of
4is connected to the generating station bus bars through 5 MVA step up transformer
having a reactance of 5 %. The bus bars are supplied by a 10 MVA alternator having 10%
reactance. Calculate the short circuit kVA fed symmetrical fault between phases if it occurs
at the high voltage terminals of the transformer.

a) Draw a neat diagram of MOCB and explain its working.
b) What is the principle of distance relaying? Explain with neat diagram. Definite distance
relay.

Q.5 Attempt any FOUR of the following 16 Marks
a) Explain with neat circuit diagram the Inter turn fault protection for alternators.
b) State and explain following faults with respect to alternator (i) Excitation failure (ii) Over
speed
c) A star connected , 3, 10 MVA ,6.6kVA alternator is protected by Mertz – Price
circulating – current principle using 1000/5 amperes current transformers. The star point of
the alternator is earthed through a resistance of 7.5 . If the minimum operating current for

the relay is 0.5 Amps. Calculate % of each phase of the stator winding which is unprotected
against earth faults, when the machine is operating at normal voltage.
d) Explain in brief the biased differential protection used for protection of transformers with
neat circuit diagram.
e) Explain in brief with the neat circuit diagram the restricted earth fault protection used for
transformers.
f) A 3transformer of 220/11000 line volts is connected in Y/. The protective transformers
on 220 Volts side have a current ratio of 600/5 Amps. What should be the CT ratio on
11000 Volts side?
