Re: Indian police service training time

The IPS (Indian Police Service) is a prestigious service in India. It is one of the three all-India services in the country. After clearing the UPSC civil services, one can get into the IPS and serve in the country’s police force.

All the officers of Indian Police Service undergo probationary training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. After successful completion of probation, officers are confirmed in the service.

There are four parts to the training imparted to the IPS recruits:

Foundation Course (3 months): LBSNAA, Mussoorie
Phase I training (Basic Course – 11 months): Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad
District Practical Training (6 months): at the respective cadre
Phase II training (1 month): Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad

LBSNAA- The First Stop

The LBSNAA Academy focuses not only on Civil Services capacity building or institution strengthening but also on the inter-services camaraderie and cooperation.

The foundation Course is intended for the new recruits to the All India Services and Central Services (Group A). It furnishes fresh officer trainees with requisite skills, knowledge and attitude to bear responsibility as public servants.

The National Police Academy- Hyderabad

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) is tasked with convert IPS officer trainees into professional police officers. This is the premier police training institution in the country before the IPS officer trainees are sent to their respective state cadres to carry out their duties.

The 2nd phase of the IPS training is done in 2 phases. The 1st phase commences in the National Police Academy in Hyderabad. The IPS officers also have to do a certain amount of training in a district of their cadre in between the 2 phases of training at the IPS academy.

IPS trainees join SVPNPA for 2nd phase of training, called the Basic Training Course. This phase extends for a period of 11 months where the Officer Trainees (OTs) study various indoor, outdoor and qualifying subjects.

The Basic Training

The purpose of basic training is to build officer trainees capacity to meet the field challenges. The course aims to ensure that the officers obtain necessary skills, knowledge, understanding, attitudes and behaviour required for effectively discharging the duties of a police officer.

This training facilitate initially and later for various senior supervisory assignments in the rank of Superintendent of Police in Districts and Specialised units of the Police Department.

The ‘Integrated Training’ format being used at the Academy to impart training focuses on the fusion of 3 dimensions: Sensitisation (personal and social), Orientation (ethical and legal) and Competency (domain and inter-segmental).

The National Police Academy aims at nurturing human values in all its areas of activity to prepare trainees not only to be good police professionals but also effective and good human beings.
