The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services as envisaged in the Constitution of India. It replaced the Indian Imperial Police in 1948.

Along with the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS), the IPS is one of the three All India Services — its officers can be employed by both the Union Government and the individual States.


IPS Exam 2020 – Important Dates


IPS Notification release date 12th February 2020
IPS Application form filling date 12th February 2020 to March 03, 2020
IPS Prelims Exam Date 31st May 2020
IPS Mains Exam Date 18th September 2020
IPS Result Date January 2021


IPS 2020 Eligibility:-


Minimum Educational Qualifications –


One must hold a degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.

One, who has appeared at an exam the passing of which would render educationally qualified for the Commission’s exam but has not been informed of the result is also one who intend to appear at such a qualifying exam will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination.


Age Limits -

One must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August, 2020 i.e., he must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1988 and not later than 1st August, 1999.


Upper Age Relaxation -

i) up to a maximum of 5 years if one belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe;

ii) up to a maximum of 3 years if one belonging to Other Backward Classes who is eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates;

iii) up to a maximum of 3 years for Defence Services Personnel, disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof;

iv) up to a maximum of 5 years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who has rendered at least 5 years Military Service as on 1st August, 2020 and has been released.


Number of Attempts
There is an upper limit on the number of attempts a candidate can make when attempting the IPS examination. Refer the table below for information:

OBC 9 attempts (up to 35 years)
SC/ST No limit (up to 37 years)
Persons with Disabilities 9 attempts (General and OBC)
No limit (SC/ST)
