Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), arranged at Thiruvananthapuram is a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. IIST capacities as an independent body under the Department of Space, Government of India. The possibility of such an establishment was mooted remembering the requirement for top notch labor for the Indian Space Research Organization, one of world's driving logical associations occupied with space research and space applications.

IIST offers different undergrad and postgraduate projects in regions that are pertinent to space concentrates on. The organization at present offers B.Tech in three branches – Aerospace Engineering, Avionics and Physical Sciences. From scholarly year 2015 onwards, a Dual Degree (B. Tech + M.S/M. Tech) will supplant the B. Tech (Physical Sciences). This five year Dual Degree Program will prompt a B.Tech degree in Engineering Physics and any of the accompanying Postgraduate specializations - (i) M.S. (Stargazing and Astrophysics) (ii) M.S. (Earth System Science) (iii) M.S. (Strong State Physics) and (iv) M.Tech (Optical Engineering).

Campus

At its origin, the foundation began working at the ATF Campus, under Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala. Present day earth cordial structures of novel design blend well with the thickly lush grounds of 100 sections of land arranged on the foot slopes of Sahyadri.

A cutting edge private grounds worked close Liquid Propulsion Systems Center in Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram was initiated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the previous Prime Minister of India on August 25, 2009.[12] The foundation began working in its new grounds from 15 August 2010. The grounds has an augmentation in the beautiful Ponmudi Hills, Thiruvananthapuram, for an observatory which is under development.
