The IIT Madras has a department of Applied Mechanics. The Fluid mechanics group is a part of the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras.

The Fluid mechanics was established in 1960's with initial grants and equipments from Germany.

The Fluid mechanics has laboratory facilities for experimental and computational research in fluid mechanics; the focus of the laboratory is turbulence and external flows.

The laboratory has many low speed wind tunnels and specialized research tunnels that can also be used for calibration and testing projects.

The laboratory usually has 10 graduate students pursuing Masters and Doctoral research.
