The French Subject Test is a great way to highlight your knowledge of written French and demonstrate your interest in the French language on your college applications. A strong score could help you fulfill basic language competency requirements or place out of introductory-level French courses. Prerequisite 3–4 years of study in high school or the equivalent, or two years of strong preparation Gradual development of competence in French over a period of years Review of sample listening questions using a practice CD that your counselor can order from the College Board Knowledge of words representing different parts of speech and some basic idioms within culturally appropriate contexts. Ability to select an appropriate word or expression that is grammatically correct within a sentence. One part of the test contains vocabulary and structure questions embedded in longer paragraphs. Try to understand of such points as the main and supporting ideas, themes, and setting of a passage. Selections are drawn from fiction, essays, historical works, newspaper and magazine articles, and everyday materials such as advertisements, timetables, forms, and tickets. Mode of Test The language used on the test is taken from pieces written and dialogue spoken by those who use French in their everyday lives.
