The objective of M. Tech. (Chemical Engineering) Program offered by Department of Chemical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal is advance professionally in the practice of plant design in chemical process industries such as petroleum and petrochemicals, fertilizer, pharmaceautical, polymer, materials, biotechnology, energy and allied fields.


Fee Structure





Program Outcomes

I. One can have an in*depth knowledge in design, operation and control of chemical process plants to meet desired performance specifications with appropriate consideration to global issues with ability to integrate the existing and new knowledge.

II. One gets the ability to critically think and analyze complex problems related to design and operation of chemical process equipment/plants: acquire available information so as to carry out independent research in development of new design/processes/operational strategies or improvements in the existing ones.

III. One gets the ability to provide innovative solutions and to evaluate a wide range of potential solutions for problems on design, operation and control of chemical process plants and arrive at feasible and optimal solutions keeping in mind societal and environmental factors.

IV. One gets the ability to identify research problems and extract information pertinent to these problems through detailed literature review; carry out research either independently or in a team in multidisciplinary environment; apply appropriate research methodologies and modern techniques and tools; design and fabricate experimental rigs; design, plan and conduct experiments; develop and simulate mathematical models; analyze and interpret data; draw meaningful conclusions.

V. One gets the ability to select, apply create and analyse appropriate tools and techniques, resources and modern engineering and computational tools in design, operation and modelling of chemical process/equipment related to complex engineering activities with proper understanding of limitations.

VI. One gets necessary skills to work in a multidisciplinary environment with a capacity for self- management and teamwork to contribute positively to collaborative scientific research or design projects, with a knowledge and understanding of group dynamics; ability to recognize opportunities; abilities for decision making based on open*mindedness, objectivity and rational analysis in order to achieve common goals.

VII. One gets the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles to manage projects related to chemical process plant design and operation in multidisciplinary environment with due consideration to finance and economics.

VIII. One gets the ability to communicate effectively with engineering community and with society at large regarding design, operation and other activities related to chemical processes, which include comprehending and writing effective reports and design documents in accordance with appropriate standards; making effective presentation; giving and receiving clear instructions.

IX. One gets the ability to understand the importance of lifelong learning and engage in it with high level of enthusiasm and commitment to improve knowledge and competence continuously to remain competent and relevant in profession.

X. One acquire professional and intellectual integrity and practice professional and research ethics including consideration of impact of research outcomes on professional practice with understanding of responsibilities to contribute to the sustainable development of society at large.

XI. One gets the ability to critically evaluate the outcomes of one’s actions and make appropriate corrective measures subsequently and learn from the mistakes without depending on external feedback.
