The government of Andhra Pradesh enacted the AP Electricity Reforms Act in 1998. As a result, in 1999 APSEB was unbundled into Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) and Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (APTRANSCO).

APTRANSCO was further unbundled into a "Transmission Corporation" and four Distribution Companies (DISCOMS).

NPTI operates on an all India basis with manpower strength of 377 including 105 officers through its nine Institutes in different zones of the country.
