The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is a public engineering institution located in Powai, Mumbai, India. It is the second-oldest institute of the Indian Institutes of Technology system. IIT Bombay was established in 1958.

Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) is one of the major Departments of IIT Bombay. The department was established in 1958.

The department is very active in teaching and research in the areas of Communications and Signal Processing, Control and Computing, Power Electronics and Power Systems, Microelectronics and VLSI design, and Electronic Systems.

Programs offered-

Undergraduate Programs

Bachelor of Technology (Electrical Engineering)

The department offers four year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) program (comprising of eight semesters).

BTech with Honors

Students have an opportunity to increase their depth in Electrical Engineering by undertaking additional courses.
By completing 30 credits (approximately five courses) from a broad list of prescribed courses, a student can earn Honors in Electrical Engineering.

Dual Degree Program-

Dual Degree program is a five year integrated program where a student is awarded BTech degree in Electrical Engineering and Master of Technology (MTech).

Currently, Dual Degree program is offered in two specializations:

(1) where MTech is awarded in Communications and Signal Processing and

(2) where MTech is awarded in Microelectronics.

In both the dual degree Programs, MTech thesis forms one of the most important components of the program.

Post Graduate Programs-

Master of Technology (MTech)

The department offers Master of Technology (MTech) program in five research areas or specializations

Communications Engineering (termed as EE1)
Control and Computing (EE2)
Power Electronics and Power System (EE3)
Microelectronics and VLSI (EE4)
Electronic Systems (EE5)

MTech in EE can be undertaken with either of the following two options-

Full Time MTech which is two years in duration
Part-Time MTech which is three years in duration

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is a flagship program of the department's research.

PhD Programs are available in five specializations –

Communications Engineering (termed as EE1)
Control and Computing (EE2)
Power Electronics and Power System (EE3)
Microelectronics and VLSI (EE4)
Electronic Systems (EE5)

Dual MTech+PhD program

The department offers admissions to a new, dual degree (M.Tech. + Ph.D.) programme.

The program is designed to induct bright students who have completed their B.E./B. Tech./M.Sc. degrees directly to the doctoral programme.

On successful completion and examination of the Doctoral Thesis, BOTH the degrees (M.Tech. and Ph.D.) are awarded to the candidate
