Re: Credit System in University of Mumbai

Mumbai University recently introduced Credits to all undergraduates and postgraduates courses from the academic year 2011-12.

Credit points are indicating work load of the learner. One credit is equal to 30 learning hours. Credit earned is transferable inter-institutional level or intra institutional level for another programme. Credits avoid re-learning of the same content area for another course if the student joins for another programme.
The learner get exemption for that course in that programme.

According to Mumbai University the credits given for programme is as under
.Compulsory Courses - 4 Credits / Course
Core/Special Course - 3 Credits / Course
Applied Components - 3 Credits / Course
Foundation Course - 2 Credits / Course
Skill Courses - 2 Credits / Course

Total Credit Value

For a 3 year course like BA/B Sc./B Com. Level is 120 credit points
For Arts, Commerce & Pg Programmes is 80 credit points
For M.Sc. programmes is 96 credit points.

In the credit system 50% of the time is spent in classroom instructions i.e., lectures, practicals etc. the rest of the time is spent in Assignments, Priojects, Journal writing case studies Library work Industrial Units attending Seminars/Workshops, preparations for examinations etc., are considered as notional hours.
