Yeah you can apply to join CID but for this you have to clear Indian Civil Services examination.

The Criminal Investigation Department is a crime detection agency under the Government of India. It was established on the 1st of April 1906.

Those officers who work in this elite agency are known as Detectives or as CID officers.

The agency also has some other divisions.

Qualifying exam

Candidates who wish to join the Crime Investigation Department must appear in the Indian Civil Services examination that is held by the Union Public Service Commission. The detail information regarding the exam and its syllabus will be available in all leading publications.

Eligibility -


There are many posts available for candidates in the CID. Their level of entry is determined by their qualification.
The minimum qualification required for a candidate to join as a constable in the CID is a pass in class 12.

If you want to apply for Sub Inspector post, then you have cleared graduation.
Graduation is the requirement for officer level post as well.

There are many universities in India that offers courses in criminology.

The basic qualification for this course is a pass in class 10+2 with a milieu in arts or science.

For those candidates who have a background in law, special courses in criminology are available.

Indian Civil Services examination syllabus

Paper I -(200 marks) Duration : Two hours

Current events of national and international importance.
History of India and Indian National Movement.
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
General Science

Paper II-(200 marks) Duration: Two hours

Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
The questions will be of multiple choices, objective type.
