The Maharashtra State Commission for Women is a statutory body, which was constituted under Maharashtra Act No.XV of 1993. The main objective of the Commission is to improve the status and dignity of women in the society as well as to investigate into practices derogatory to women and suggest suitable remedial measures to them.

Studies Conducted by the Maharashtra State Commission for Women are as given below:

Research Studies published by the Commission:
The Commission undertakes in-depth investigate studies on wide range of issues in order to gain insight into the plight of women coming from various sections of society. These research studies are held by experts in their respective fields.

Jail Inspection Report
The Chairperson, Member Secretary and the Members of the Commission inspected over 22 Jails in the State. These inspections were based on a complete questionnaire which dealt with various aspects of the well being of the inmates. The explanation made by the Commission were compiled into an analytical report.

‘Status of Tribal Women in Maharashtra’
The Scheduled Tribe population in Maharashtra is 73.18 lakh, i.e. 9% of the whole population of the state. There are forty seven tribes in Maharashtra main tribes being Bhils, Gonds, Mahadeo Kolis, Pawras, Thakurs and Warlis. The tribal appear to be the most vulnerable lot because of their geographical location and also because of lack of voice.

‘Status of Women in Mental Hospital in Maharashtra’
Mental health problems comprise 8% of the global burden of diseases and more than 15% of adults in just beginning societies are estimated to suffer from mental illness. Domestic Violence, sexual abuse and exploitation, early marriage, unwanted pregnancies and abortions, marital discord, etc. are identified to contribute to high levels of emotional distress in women.

Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Workplaces/Educational Institutions:
Despite the unenthusiastic effects of sexual harassment on women, society at large continues to view it as just harmless expression of male sexuality. The assignment with Research Centre for Women Studies (RCWS), SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai and the India Centre for Human Rights and Law (ICHRL) approved an Action Research Project conducted in Sir J.J. Hospital and Grant Medical College on ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Workplace/Educational Institutions’.

An action Research Project was held in Veermata Jijamata Jijabai Technical Institution on ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Workplace/Educational Institutions by the Commission with Research Centre for Women’s Studies (RCWS), SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai and the Indian Centre for Human Rights & Law (ICHRL) Mumbai.

“A Study on Gender Selective Abortion”
The assignment is being seriously concerned with the decrease in the sex ratio in the state felt it crucial to conduct “A Study on Gender Selective Abortion” in Mumbai. In command to carry out the research it commissioned Dr. Achala Daga, Asst. Professor, Grant Medical College and Sir J.J. Hospital, to carry out the research.
