Banaras Hindu University is a public central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was founded by the great nationalist leader, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, in 1916 with cooperation of great personalities like Dr Annie Besant, who viewed it as the University of India. Banaras Hindu University was created under the Parliamentary legislation - B.H.U. Act 1915.

It is one of the largest residential universities in Asia, with over 20,000 students. It is organised into 6 institutes and 14 faculties (streams) and more than 132 departments.
